Modern Warfare 3 MSR Guide

In this Modern Warfare 3 MSR guide, we will be revealing everything you need to know about this CoD MW3 sniper rifle. We will start with the gun’s basic information and then dive into its strengths and weaknesses and finally discuss the best attachments and proficiencies to use with this weapon.

Modern Warfare 3 MSR Guide – Weapon Overview

The MSR is the most traditional Sniper Rifle available in Modern Warfare 3. It has the highest accuracy of any Sniper Rifle but also has a low firing rate and a small clip size (it is considered a “bolt action” sniper rifle).

This particular weapon is unlocked at level 66 and has a 5-round clip. It is very similar to the L118A but has the benefit of slightly more accuracy.

Call of Duty MW3 MSR Guide – Strengths

Out of all the Sniper Rifles in-game, the MSR is likely the best for those who want a Sniper Rifle role like you might see in a movie – patiently waiting for the perfect long-range shot from cover or such a long range that the enemy cannot counter attack.

The reason it is best suited for this is because it has the most accuracy out of any Sniper Rifle and is capable of taking out a player in one hit with either a torso shot or a head shot.

This weapon also offers good mobility so you can move from spot to spot quickly in order to prevent enemies from using the kill cam to discover your hiding spot.

Modern Warfare 3 MSR Guide – Weaknesses

The primary weakness of the MSR is that this sort of playstyle does not work well in Modern Warfare 3. This is not like the movie Enemy at the Gates where snipers are watching people from extremely long ranges.

The maps just are not big enough to get a full use out of a Sniping build like this. You might end up with a good kill:death ratio, but in a game like Team Deathmatch, you will be lucky to rack cup more than 7 kills if you are just camping and waiting for people to run into view. The people at the top of the leaderboards are always using some other weapon class for that reason (or quick-scoping with a semi-automatic Sniper Rifle).

There were some larger maps in Black Ops which made Sniping at least somewhat useful, but these just do not exist in Modern Warfare 3. Perhaps this will change when they release new maps.

Modern Warfare 3 MSR Guide – Proficiencies and Attachments

Unlock with other sniping builds, building out a long-range sniper does not require the Kick proficiency – you need to finish off your target in 1-shot from such a long range. You do not have time to readjust for a second shot unless the person is just standing there.

For this reason, you either want to stick with Stability (reduces sway of the scope) or Attachments for your proficiency.

The benefits of Stability are obvious – it reduces the amount of drift your Sniper Rifle experiences. The reason it is not a complete shoe-in is simply because it only reduces it by a little bit – it is not all that significant. However, when you combine it with holding your breath, the Sniper Rifle is practically completely still.

The Attachments proficiency is good if you want to build a stealth build. You will always want to use Variable Zoom Scope (since it provides you with a nice range of magnifications), so if you want a stealth build, you will want to grab a Silencer along with the Variable Zoom Scope.

Using either Stability and Variable Zoom Scope or Attachments with Variable Zoom Scope and a Silencer are both valuable options. It depends if you want to stay off the radar at the cost of some range and aiming ability or whether you’d rather have max range and better aim (via less scope sway).

Modern Warfare 3 MSR Guide Conclusion

The MSR is not my favorite sniper rifle, but it is likely to be the best at long-range sniping. It is something you might want to unlock all the attachments on just in case they add bigger, more open maps in the future. The current map pool just does not offer anything big enough to make full use out of a long-range sniping build like the one presented in this article.
