Modern Warfare 3 AS50 Guide

In this Modern Warfare 3 AS50 Guide, we will be talking extensively about the AS50 Sniper Rifle. We will start with an overview, continue into its strengths and weaknesses, and finally discuss the best proficiencies and attachments to use with this weapon.

Modern Warfare 3 AS50 Guide Overview

The AS50 is the fourth Sniper Rifle you get access to in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. This particular weapon is unlocked at level 22 and has a 5-round clip.

The stats on this weapon are identical to the Barrett .50cal in terms of power, firing rate, accuracy, range, and mobility.

The gun differs from the Barrett .50cal in the fact that it has a very weak default scope and what seems to be less kick (though this could be due to the weaker scope).

Modern Warfare 3 AS50 Guide – Strengths

The AS50 is one of the better Sniper Rifles available in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. It is essentially a Barret .50cal with a smaller clip and weaker scope. This may sound like a bad thing at first, but the truth is that the weaker scope is more suited to the small maps found in Modern Warfare 3.

Personally, I find the high-powered Barret .50cal scope to be too much magnification, especially in multiplayer. Better players can do more with the weaker scope native to the AS50. There are very few maps where you would want any more magnification than that as it is. This also lets you pick a proficiency and a different attachment (such as a silencer).

The AS50 appears to have less kick than the Barrett .50cal, but this could be due to the weak scope. Weaker scopes have less apparent kick simply because moving the gun an inch when you are zoomed in to 8x magnification moves the screen a lot more than moving the gun an inch when you are at 2x magnification.

Just like the Barrett .50cal, the AS50 is good at taking out player simply because it is a 1-hit kill with a torso or head shot. I find it is much better at mid-ranged combat as the 8x scope of the Barrett .50cal can be a bit overwhelming.

To me, the weaker scope is worth the clip size decrease. You may want to eventually pick up Scavenger for Perk Slot 1 though just to get the some more ammo. The clip size is big enough, but 15 total bullets is not a lot one you get pretty good with the weapon.

CoD MW3 AS50 Guide – Weaknesses

As mentioned above, one of the biggest weaknesses of this gun is it small amount of starting ammo. If you are playing on a console, 15 bullets is not a lot to work with, even if the gun is good at getting 1-hit kills.

Other than that, this gun is really solid as far as Sniper Rifles go. Just like all Sniper Rifles in Modern Warfare 3, the real problem is whether or not using this weapon is actually worth it.

I practically never see top players use Sniper Rifles in games on the console simply because all the maps are small enough where an Assault Rifle like the Type 95 is fully capable of taking out a Sniper from range and much more effect at short and mid-ranged fights.

This of course is a bit different on PC as players can quick scope much easier there. If you are looking for a gun to Quick Scope with, the AS50 is likely the gun for you as it is in my opinion the best overall Sniper Rifle.

Even with its 2x magnification native scope, I find that the Kick proficiency is still probably your best bet. The AS50 does have a decent amount of kick just like any Sniper Rifle so anything you can do to reduce that will be very beneficial.

Since its 2x magnification default scope is such an advantage, you can get away with actually using a silencer on the AS50 as your attachment. It is hard to make use of its great range as it is with the 2x scope.

As a result, the AS50 is definitely the best Sniper Rifle in-game to use a silencer with. If you want a stealth Sniper build, this is by far the best choice you can make. The only exception might be on a larger map with low visibility like Outpost.

As far as other attachments go, if you are going to use another scope, you might as well use the Barrett .50cal, which has a larger clip size. Extended Mags seems just as pointless, as this will still give you a smaller clip than the Barrett .50cal. You can try the heartbeat sensor, but I dislike it with the Sniper Rifle, simply because too many people use Assassin and its range is too short.

Modern Warfare 3 Modern Warfare AS50 Guide Conclusion

Out of all the Sniper Rifles, the AS50 is probably my favorite. Its weak scope is actually quite useful due to the small map sizes in MW3 multiplayer games, its powerful enough to get a 1-hit torso shot, and its maxed out range allow you to use a silencer with virtually no penalty.
