Modern Warfare 3 AK-47 Guide – Overview

The AK-47 is a fully automatic Assault Rifle with a 30 round clip. It is unlocked at level 68. Though famous in its namesake, its function in the game is fairly limited as it is just not that good of a weapon.

The main problem with this weapon is that its effective weapon damage is the same as most other fully automatic assault rifles – three normal hits for a kill or two hits when one is a headshot (only the FAD is different – it requires 4 bullets).

This means that the AK-47 takes 3 bullets to kill an enemy and so does the M4A1.


Modern Warfare 3 AK-47 Guide – Strengths

The AK-47′s primary calling card is its long range and its good iron sights. However, it is just so slow and inaccurate compared to the M4A1, and it has no range advantage over the SCAR-L despite being less accurate and much slower. I still consider this gun useless.

The key thing to remember is the high damage rating of the AK-47 is useless – 3 bullets for a kill is 3 bullets no matter how high that rating is.

The main weakness of the AK-47 is that it just does not serve a purpose compared to other guns in the game. Let’s compare the AK-47 to the M4A1:

  • Similar reload times (both fast – too fast to tell a difference between the two, but if anything the M4A1 is actually faster)
  • Same bullet damage
  • The M4A1 has a much faster firing rate, giving it 20-30% more firepower than the AK-47
  • The M4A1 has the same or less kick
  • The M4A1 has much better accuracy
  • The AK-47 has better sights
  • The AK-47 has slightly more range

To me, the huge amount of extra firepower and extra accuracy that the M4A1 provides is a far greater advantage than better sights and a bit of range. The actual range of these weapons actually favors the M4A1 due to its much faster firing rate and better accuracy anyway.


Modern Warfare 3 AK-47 Guide – Proficiencies and Attachments

Should you decide to use this weapon in order to unlock the achievements, there is one thing you can take advantage of. For some reason the AK-47′s model does not take up much screen space when you are holding down the sights without a red dot.

This means that you do not have to use any sort of optics as an attachment and can instead pick something else without messing with your vision too much. In this instance, it means you can pick up the Focus proficiency and a silencer at the same time. Since this gun has a good range, this can work decently.

Being able to use Focus or Kick and a silencer simultaneously is the one redeeming thing about the AK-47.

Unfortunately for AK-47 fans, this Assault Rifle just is not quite on par with some of the other Assault Rifles you get access to in Modern Warfare 3. Stick to the M4A1 or SCAR-L for much faster firing rates and better accuracy if you like to use fully automatic assault rifles.
